Riffsmith

About Riffsmith

Riffsmith is an AI-powered improv comedy training app that helps comedians build fundamentals through daily practice. Each day offers one short scene with up to eight exchanges, scored across acceptance, adaptation, pattern development, and pacing. An AI scene partner responds while a coaching layer evaluates your technique and offers targeted feedback.

The app features five different scene partners—Alex, Morgan, Remy, Jordan, and Casey—each with distinct temperaments to rehearse against varied styles. You can track progress through a Skill Progression Tree covering Yes And, Character Work, Emotional Truth, Escalation, Game of the Scene, Status Play, and Callbacks. The Stage Time streak system encourages daily practice with banked streak freezes that cover missed days without resetting weeks of work.

Riffsmith offers three AI modes: scripted offline scenes without coaching, on-device Apple Intelligence for private practice, and optional cloud-based Enhanced mode for detailed feedback. All practice is privacy-first, with audio never recorded—only on-device transcription that converts your voice to text for the scene.

FAQ

How does AI coaching work in Riffsmith?

Riffsmith offers three AI modes: Off for scripted local scenes without coaching, On-Device using Apple Intelligence for private offline scene assistance on eligible devices, and Enhanced mode which uses Claude Haiku for scene responses and Claude Opus for detailed coaching. Enhanced is opt-in; your default is always private.

Does Riffsmith record my voice?

No. Riffsmith transcribes what you say using Apple's on-device speech recognition. No audio is saved to your device and none is uploaded—only the resulting text enters the scene. You can also play typed instead of spoken or turn on Quiet Mode to practice without sound.

What happens to my Stage Time streak if I miss a day?

Riffsmith banks streak freezes as you practice, and one is spent automatically to cover a missed day, so a single off day doesn't wipe out weeks of work. You can enable a freeze warning notification in Settings to be told before a freeze is used.

Can I use Riffsmith offline?

Yes. Riffsmith's Off and On-Device modes keep working with no network connection. Enhanced AI mode and premium scene-partner voice require a connection, but the core offline functionality remains available.

Is my comedy material private in Riffsmith?

Your scene text stays on your device by default. In Enhanced mode, scene text is sent to Anthropic only for generating your partner's next line and coaching report. It is not used to train models, and no name, email, or device identifier is attached since the apps have no accounts.
