About PLCGateway AI MCP

The PLCGateway AI MCP homepage

PLCGateway includes an MCP server in every product, allowing AI assistants and agents to perform industrial automation tasks. Assistants can connect machines by listing protocols, creating and testing devices, and adding tags with descriptions. They can build process screens and report dashboards for review, define machines for OEE calculation across discrete, continuous or batch production, and answer questions about values, history, alarm statistics, batches and production data in plain language.

The system enforces the same role-based access control as people: viewer, operator and administrator rights apply to AI assistants, with configuration tools available only to administrator sessions or dedicated tokens. Data stays on the customer's hardware; PLCGateway sends nothing to the cloud by itself. Screens and dashboards created by assistants are drafts that people review before going live, and every write is logged with the user's name.

FAQ

What is MCP and why does PLCGateway have it built in?
The Model Context Protocol is the open standard that AI assistants and agents use to call tools and read data from other software. PLCGateway includes an MCP server in every product so an assistant can work with the plant the way an engineer does, performing tasks like listing protocols, creating and testing devices, adding tags, building screens and reports, defining machines for OEE, and reading values, history, alarms, production, energy and maintenance figures. No separate AI add-on or cloud service is needed.
Which assistants and agents can I use?
Any client that supports MCP can be used, including desktop assistants, coding assistants, chat clients, automation agents and self-hosted models. The connection works over Streamable HTTP on the network or stdio on the same machine, with exact connection details and configuration tokens shown in the AI/MCP page in PLCGateway.
Does my production data leave the plant?
PLCGateway runs on your own hardware and sends nothing to any cloud by itself. The assistant receives only the results of the tool calls it makes, not the entire database. If the assistant runs a cloud model, those results travel to that model's provider under your contract with them; with a self-hosted model nothing leaves your network.
Can the assistant change my plant without me noticing?
No. Reading needs viewer rights, writing values needs operator rights and configuration needs administrator rights, exactly as for people. Screens and dashboards created by an assistant are drafts that people review before they go live, configuration tools are only available to an administrator session or a local connection, and every write is logged with the user's name.
What does a typical conversation with an AI assistant look like?
A typical conversation might start with 'Add the Siemens S7-1500 at 192.168.1.20 and its tank level' which creates and tests the device and tag. Questions like 'How many alarms did line 3 have in the last two hours and which were the top five?' become alarm statistics queries. Requests like 'Draft a shift report for the filling line with output, OEE and energy per bottle' produce dashboards for review. The assistant answers in your language and reads PLCGateway's own help when needed.
