FAQ

What is HackerTube?
HackerTube is a way to discover YouTube videos that people on Hacker News recommend. It is an independent browser of the open HackerTube dataset, with a daily mix, topic filters, and a personal watch list.
How does the HackerTube daily mix work?
The HackerTube daily mix uses a date-based shuffle weighted toward videos recommended across multiple months. Everyone starts with the same UTC daily selection, and your filters and local watch history help you explore it your own way.
Does HackerTube remember what I have watched?
Yes. Mark a HackerTube video as watched and this browser remembers it in local storage. You can undo that action, hide watched videos, or return to your watched collection. No account is required and records do not sync across devices.
Where do HackerTube recommendations come from?
The open HackerTube export contains 6,454 videos and 39,834 labeled Hacker News comments from 2007–2026. This browser shows recommended videos and excludes short-lived news by default. Labels and summaries were generated with AI and may contain errors.
Can I filter HackerTube videos by length?
HackerTube length filters use actual runtimes from the YouTube Data API when available: under 20 minutes, 20–60 minutes, and 60 minutes or longer. Videos without a verified duration remain in the unfiltered collection.
