About Cyan

The Cyan homepage

Cyan is an independent video game studio founded in 1987 by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller. The company began by creating interactive digital storybooks for children, including The Manhole, Cosmic Osmo, and Spelunx. In 1993, Cyan released Myst, a surreal adventure game that became a cultural phenomenon, with Myst and its sequel Riven selling over 15 million copies worldwide and Myst holding the record as the best-selling video game of the 20th century until 2002.

Following Robyn Miller's departure in 1999, founder Rand Miller continued leading the company's vision for interactive storytelling. In 2003, Cyan launched Uru (Myst Online), a multiplayer online world that spawned a thriving community and remains available to play for free. Since 2016's Obduction, Cyan has specialized in using Unreal Engine to develop modern experiences.

In 2019, the company transitioned to new leadership under Hannah Gamiel (Development Director) and Eric A. Anderson (Creative Director), leading to fully rebuilt modern remakes of both Myst and Riven, as well as the 2023 release Firmament. All titles are playable in both traditional and VR modes. Today, Cyan maintains its mission of creating incredible immersive experiences while operating as the world's oldest surviving independent video game studio.
